For quite a while now I've been collaborating with Vince Chambers, owner of Apollo Piano in Chico, CA, trying to work out plans and logistics for starting a new music school. We have what seems to be dozens of great ideas, and over the last few months we've been bouncing them around. He is already in the process of taking over the lease at The Wright Keys Academy (see last news item) and using that as the facility for the new school. The better news is that after providing music classes (including piano lessons) in that facility, he plans to buy an even bigger space that consists of about 6,000 square feet. The space is located on Mangrove Avenue in Chico (close to Unwind Restaurant) and according to our latest discussions there has been talk of it opening around July. Just a few of the wild ideas we have for embarking on this exciting venture:
1. The new music school seems like it may follow a model similar to a full-fledged music conservatory (formal lessons in a variety of instruments, including piano, violin, cello, flute, trumpet, voice, etc.)
2. We're thinking of ways to include other types of classes, such as music theory, music appreciation, etc., and adding other services/activities that would be part of the school, such as a jazz club, an opera club, a "theory bar" and software with headphones where students can "prep" and/or practice their ear training before a lesson.
3. Bi-annual talent shows, a course in music composition, recitals, concerts featuring the students as well as recitals for budding/beginning composers, and running a "songwriter's workshop" for beginning composers.
Just few of the ideas we've been kicking around. The logistical, financial and legal challenges we're facing are quite substantial, but we're working on it, so be sure to check back soon for updates! :)
